The old roads

The old part of Clermont is delimited by the route of the ramparts, as they existed at the end of the Middle Ages.

The central section consisted of many buildings or enclosures dependant on the See or Chapter. These were removed to enable the clearing of a space around the cathedral and the creation of the Place de la Victoire. Between the line of the ramparts as they were at the end of the Middle Ages and the top of the knoll on which Clermont is situated, most of the roads fan out and in the central section end up following a line imposed by historical circumstances, in particular the location of the five gates. The main old roads are: Rue de la Boucherie continuing into Rue Tour-la-Monnaie, Rue des Gras which formerly led directly to the cathedral porch, Rue des Chaussetiers, Rue Pascal, Rue du Port.
